2023 Hair Care Resolutions Guide
New Year, new hair is so overused, but that doesn’t stop us from wanting to achieve “hair goals” for 2023. After a year of over processed, color-damaged, and over heat use. It is time to give our hair the care it needs and achieve that glossy healthy looking hair, we’ve always dreamed of.
Before you soak your hair into numerous hair products, we will like to remind you that this process takes time, consistency, and patience. With the right consistency you will be seeing results in no time!
Tip # 1 - Identify for your hair type
One of the biggest mistake you might have been doing in the past is using the incorrect products for your hair. In order to start the correct hair care you have to identify your hair needs and that will be the start of a beautiful healing journey… “For your hair of course!” Is your hair oily and thin or is it thick and dry? Is it severely damaged or does it have a small amount of split ends? Is it frizzy or does it need volume?
To identify your hair type, let it dry naturally after your next wash. Once your hair has air-dried without product being added, is it:
- Straight? (with no curls)
- Wavy? (s-shaped curves)
- Curly? (prominent and defined loops)
- Tight Curls? (includes spirals and coils)
- Undefined coils? (varied curls and coils)
If your hair is severely damaged and has no form than we recommend looking at some images before the over-processed hair era. Sometimes this can help you identify your hair type.
Tip # 2 - Give your hair a REST!
This applies to many but not all. If you've been overly dying your hair or using excessive heat. It is time to give your hair a rest.
To maintain your hair at an ideal color without needing to apply harsh chemicals, we recommend dying your hair back to it’s natural color. Don’t worry this will be just during the repair process. Once you achieve your hair goals than you can go back to the dyes but please stay close to your natural hair color range to avoid further damage.
As tempting as it is to curl or straighten your hair, we promise that heatless styles are just as beautiful. This may be the time to get ideas from TikTok for heatless curls or any other heatless styles. It is best recommended to stick to this just while you allow your hair to get back to its natural way.
Tip # 3 - Wash in a responsible way
This may seem as an obvious thing but you’ll be surprised by how many wash their hair incorrectly.
Did you know that shampoo is meant to be applied only on your scalp? Yes, we know hair commercials show a model lathering her entire hair. But the truth is shampoos are created to remove all build up, dirt and unwanted oils from your scalp. Applying shampoo to your ends will only dry your hair. For your next hair wash focus on only lathering your scalp, any unnecessary dirt or oils will be removed from the rest of your hair once you rinse. There is no need to apply shampoo to your hair except your scalp.
Pro Tip: When purchasing shampoos make sure to use a formula that is free of sulfates and parabens. These chemicals are usually used to create lather but don’t benefit your hair. If your hair is oily stick to a clarifying shampoo that will remove all product build up.
Now on to conditioners. Did you know that you need to avoid your scalp when you use a conditioner? Reason being is that your scalp already produces natural oils and adding conditioner will only create an oily scalp. When conditioning focus on half way to the ends of your hair. Sometimes the oil your scalp creates doesn’t reach the ends which can result to dry brittle hair. To avoid oily hair, avoid the scalp.
Pro Tip: If you have thin hair, it is best to go for a light formula that won’t weigh down your hair.
Tip # 4 - Add an extra step to your routine
It has come to our attention that many of you either avoid or just decide to not use hair masks or oils. Yes, we get it how risky it sound especially for those of you who struggle with oily hair. But did you know that there are multiple masks and oils for specific hair types?
Reasons why you should be masking once a week. A hair mask helps restore all hair moisture while strengthening your strands resulting into less hair breakage. To get the right hair mask we encourage you go back to step 1 and identify your hair type. Not to brag or anything but we do recommend using Silk’e Deep Conditioning Hair Mask. This mask has been uniquely formulated to be light weight while giving the right amount of moisture to all hair types. Don’t believe us? You can read our reviews, our Sleek’e babes don’t lie.
If you decide to go for another hair mask, don’t worry there’s no harsh feelings. Just makes sure the mask reaches your hair needs.
Pro Tip: When apply hair mask, we recommend once again avoiding the scalp to prevent any oily hair.
Hair oils can sound a bit scary if you don’t know how to use them properly. These oils are created to give your scalp and hair the nutrients it needs. This step creates strength but also promotes growth. When applying a hair oil make sure to massage your scalp to help stimulate and create blood flow. Make sure to be gentle and withing time you will be able to see amazing results!
Pro Tip: When using hair oils make sure to apply a small amount to avoid clogged pores. This can result to hair loss and oily hair. Hair oils are recommended to be used twice a week not daily.
Tip # 5 - Trim your hair
Avoid split ends by trimming your hair. If your goals are to achieve long hair, we recommend that you consult with your hair stylist by informing them that you wish to maintain your hair length and you only need your ends trimmed. It is helpful to ask how many times you should step into the salon to trim off your ends.
A hair care shouldn’t be difficult nor should it consist of too much product use. Like we mentioned in the beginning, once you identify your hair type, it will be easy for you to care for your hair.
